Bluebonnets..... A Texas Tradition

Every spring Texans gather in their cars and drive out of town to find a bluebonnet patch to capture the family picture. This is a tradition I heard of when I first moved here to Texas, and I always thought it was a cute idea. You can find bluebonnet patches along the highways from San Antonio to Dallas and all the places in between. Last fall, I mentioned this to Randy, who was also new to this proud Texas tradition, and he said we would drive out of Houston City Limits one weekend in the spring and capture the family in the field of bluebonnets.

I procrastinated, a wonderful quality that I possess :(, and we almost missed the bluebonnets. Luckily, Randy's co-worker has a patch of bluebonnets that grow in his front yard, and happened to mention it in passing. This would work great because we had not planned the 2 or 3 hour trip out of town to go searching for the bluebonnet fields and Randy's co-worker just lives 30 minutes away. We all threw on our matching white shirts and jeans packed up the car and headed to Jerry's house.

First day: Reese fell asleep on the way there and was rudely awaken by Mom to put him in a patch of wildflowers. Reese has never really sat in grass before and was very curious about this new feeling. The sun was so bright that his eyes were squinted and he was looking down at the flowers in almost every picture. Not to mention he was in a groggy state from being awoken from his slumber. Most the pictures turned out like this picture to the right.

Bluebonnets are only around for a month at the most, if people haven't been tramping through them to take pictures. So if we wanted to attempt another day we would have to go soon.

Second day: Today, I looked outside and realized that this would be a good day to try our pictures again, it was slight overcast. We packed up the car again and headed up to Jerry's (Randy's co-worker) home. Reese fell asleep again on the way there and again was amazed by the grass. But, the sun being hidden by the clouds allowed Reese to atleast look up at the camera.
The pictures came out better than the first day and out of 300 shots taken on both days (don't worry I have a feature on my camera that takes continuous shots until you let go of the shutter button) we wound up with about 25 good ones. Reese had the most fun feeling the grass on his toes and trying to eat the bluebonnets (picture to the right).

Official Texans!

So.... it's finally official we are true Texans and thus beginning our spring tradition of bluebonnet pictures. Jerry's house worked wonderful this year and in a bind I will hopefully take advantage of it again. But.... I am hoping to plan a spring getaway weekend every year to the hill country of Texas and will capture the bluebonnet pictures there. The Hill Country of Texas is by far the prettiest area of Texas. I hope that the trip is something we look forward to each year.

Here are a bunch more of our pictures in the bluebonnets!

I loved the bluebonnet pictures. Your Dad would like to start a blog so he can post the traditional Kentucky yearly pictures.
